How it's calculated
- CPA
- = spend ÷ conversions
- Break-even CPA
- = price − product cost − shipping − fees
Example
$1,800 of ads brought 72 orders, so CPA = 1,800 ÷ 72 = $25. If each order leaves $31 after product, shipping and fees, every order still earns $6 after ads.
CPA vs break-even CPA
Your CPA only means something next to what an order leaves you before ads. That amount is your break-even CPA: pay less per order and you profit, pay more and you lose on every sale. Get it from the break-even ROAS calculator.
FAQ
How do I calculate CPA?
Divide ad spend by the number of conversions. $1,800 ÷ 72 orders = $25.
What's a good CPA?
Any CPA below your profit per order before ads (your break-even CPA). For repeat-purchase products you may accept a higher first-order CPA if customers come back.
Is CPA the same as CAC?
Close. CPA usually counts one campaign's conversions; customer acquisition cost (CAC) spreads all acquisition spend over new customers only.
Should I use platform-reported conversions?
Use them to compare ads, but check totals against your store's real orders, since platforms can count the same sale differently.
