= plan + sales × card rate + international sales × 1% + orders × $0.30
Other provider
= plan + provider fees + sales × Shopify third-party fee

Example

On Basic (paid yearly, $29/month) with $20,000 of sales over 400 orders, 10% international, on Shopify Payments: 29 + 20,000 × 2.9% + 2,000 × 1% + 400 × $0.30 = $749, about 3.7% of sales.

When the third-party fee applies

If you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its third-party transaction fee on those orders, on top of what the provider charges. That's why the plan you pick changes the total so much when you can't use Shopify Payments.

FAQ

How much does Shopify take per sale?

On Shopify Payments, the plan's card rate: 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic for US standard online cards, +1% for international cards. With another provider, the provider's fee plus Shopify's third-party fee (2% on Basic).

Is Shopify cheaper paid yearly?

Yes: Basic is $29/month paid yearly vs $39 monthly, Grow $79 vs $105, Advanced $299 vs $399 (checked 2026-10-21).

Can I avoid the third-party transaction fee?

Shopify waives it when you use Shopify Payments. Where Shopify Payments isn't available, a higher plan lowers the rate.

Are these rates the same in every country?

No. These are Shopify's US rates; other countries have their own card rates. Check Shopify's pricing page for your country.
