What a digital-product seller actually needs
A digital product has no shipping, so three things decide the platform: the fee per sale, who handles sales tax and VAT, and who owns the customer. The platforms below differ mostly on the second point. A merchant of record (MoR) is the company that legally sells to the buyer, collects the tax and deals with chargebacks. You pay a bigger fee and get that work removed.
Fees on one page, October 28, 2026
All figures come from each provider's public pricing page on October 28, 2026, in US dollars. Prices change, so check the page before you decide.
| Platform | Published fee | Extras listed | Merchant of record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad | 10% + $0.50 on direct and profile sales; 30% on Discover sales | No monthly fee | Yes, per its pricing page (worldwide sales tax collection from January 1, 2025) |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + 50¢ | +1.5% non-US, +1.5% PayPal, +0.5% subscriptions; payout fees; +5% on carts recovered by email | Yes, tax collection and filing included |
| Paddle | 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction | No monthly, migration or hidden fees stated; custom pricing for orders under $10 | Yes |
| Whop (domestic card) | 2.7% + $0.30 | +1.5% international card, +1% currency conversion, payout and dispute fees | No: you remain the seller; optional tax tool is 2% |
Lemon Squeezy's payout fees are free to a US bank account through Stripe, 1% per payout to a bank account outside the US, and $0.50 per PayPal payout for US accounts (3%, capped at $30, outside the US). See our Whop fees guide for Whop's own payout and dispute costs.
What a $20 product costs
| Platform | Fee on a $20 sale | Share of the price |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad (direct link) | $2.50 | 12.5% |
| Gumroad (Discover) | $6.50 | 32.5% |
| Lemon Squeezy (US card) | $1.50 | 7.5% |
| Lemon Squeezy (non-US card) | $1.80 | 9% |
| Paddle | $1.50 | 7.5% |
| Whop (domestic card) | $0.84 | 4.2% |
The fixed part hurts cheap products most. At $5, Gumroad's direct fee is $1.00 (20%) and a 5% + 50¢ fee is $0.75 (15%). If you sell low-priced products, the percentage matters less than the fixed amount.
Which one fits
- You sell a few files and want zero setup. Gumroad is the simplest. You pay for that convenience, and Discover sales cost three times a direct sale.
- You sell software or subscriptions to buyers in many countries. A merchant of record such as Lemon Squeezy or Paddle removes the tax filing. That work is real: it is why their fee is higher than a plain processor's.
- You already have a store and an audience. Selling on your own domain keeps the customer list and lets you add one-click upsells, bundles and cart recovery. You then own tax compliance, so check what applies where your buyers live, or ask an accountant.
- Your processor refuses digital goods. Digital products are a category some processors restrict. Read Stripe's fees and the Whop vs Stripe comparison before you rely on one. No platform guarantees approval; each decides for itself.
Selling digital products on Shopify with Chekvo
Shopify can sell digital files through apps, and Shopify's own plan and transaction fees apply. See Shopify fees in 2026 for the plan prices and the third-party transaction fee that applies when you use a provider other than Shopify Payments.
Chekvo replaces the checkout with a branded one-page checkout. Shoppers pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay through your own Whop account, and every order is created in Shopify, so your delivery app and email flow keep working. A one-click upsell on the thank-you page is a natural fit for digital goods: nothing to ship, so the add-on is a single tap.

Chekvo plans start at $99 a month with 500 orders included, then $0.15 per extra order. Whop's processing fee is separate and goes to Whop. Whop decides whether to approve your account and whether to hold funds; read Is Whop legit? for how reserves and payouts work.
How to choose in five minutes
- Write your average order value. Under $10, the fixed fee dominates; ask Paddle or Lemon Squeezy for custom pricing.
- List where your buyers live. Many countries means tax work; decide whether you pay a merchant of record or handle it yourself.
- Decide who should own the customer relationship. On Gumroad's Discover, the platform brought the buyer and charges accordingly.
- Do the sum for 100 orders a month at your price using the tables above.
- Start with the option you can leave. Export your customer list and keep your product files in your own storage.
