How it's calculated
- CPM
- = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000
- Spend
- = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
- Impressions
- = spend ÷ CPM × 1,000
Example
You spent $250 and got 40,000 impressions. CPM = 250 ÷ 40,000 × 1,000 = $6.25. At the same CPM, $1,000 would buy about 160,000 impressions.
What CPM tells you
CPM measures how expensive it is to reach people, not whether the ad works. A low CPM with a weak click-through rate can cost more per sale than a high CPM with a strong one, so read CPM together with CTR, CPC and cost per purchase.
Why CPMs move
Auctions get busier around holidays and big shopping days, narrow audiences cost more to reach, and some placements and countries cost more than others. Compare CPMs for the same audience and placement over time rather than across platforms.
FAQ
What does CPM stand for?
Cost per mille: the cost of 1,000 impressions (mille is Latin for thousand).
How do I calculate CPM?
Divide ad spend by impressions and multiply by 1,000. $250 for 40,000 impressions is a $6.25 CPM.
Is a lower CPM always better?
No. What matters is the cost per purchase. A cheaper audience that rarely clicks or buys can cost more per sale.
How is CPM different from CPC?
CPM is the price of 1,000 impressions; CPC is the price of one click. CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 1,000).
